New High Performance CPR Protocols Saves A Vermont Teens Life from Sudden Cardiac Arrest

A Vermont teen was playing basketball in the front yard of his house with his dad and brother. According to his parents, he has always been active in sports, and did not know of any health issues. Suddenly, he collapsed and stopped breathing.

When he woke up at the hospital, he was told that it was Tachycardia. This is where the heart beats so fast (more than 100 beats per minute) that the blood can’t flow through the body fast enough

When the Richmond Rescue responded to a scene in Vermont, they say a teen who had suddenly collapsed because his heart stopped. The rescue team used a new type of CPR called high-performance CPR. High-performance CPR is simply a new set of protocols that can provide real-time feedback when performing CPR. This real-time feedback is allowing hospitals and first responders to continuously to adjust their CPR performance in order to maintain the maximum quality possible. Fortunately, Richmond, Vermont is a testing site for these new CPR protocols.

Currently, a high-performance CPR approach is being used by pre-EMS providers such as law enforcement officers, correctional officers, lifeguards, just to name a few. According to the American Safety & Health Institute (ASHI), any organization can incorporate these new high-performance CPR protocols.

The training programs for high-performance CPR is instructor-led and can be incorporated into any instructor-led CPR and BLS training program. (Currently, JEMS Med is not offering this training program yet, but will do in the near future.)
