Thigh and Leg Muscles Lecture

Anterior and Medial Muscles Promoting Movements of the Thigh and Leg

The muscles in the anterior compartment of the thigh are innervated by the femoral nerve (L2-L4), and as a general rule, act to extend the leg at the knee joint. There are three major muscles in the anterior thigh – the pectineus, sartorius and quadriceps femoris.

What muscles are in upper thigh?

The thigh has three sets of strong muscles: the hamstring muscles in the back of the thigh, the quadriceps muscles in the front, and the adductor muscles on the inside. The quadriceps and hamstrings work together to straighten (extend) and bend (flex) the leg. The adductor muscles pull the legs together.

What is the big thigh muscle called?

The quadriceps femoris, also called the quadriceps extensor, quadriceps or quads) is a large muscle group that includes the four prevailing muscles on the front of the thigh. It is the great extensor muscle of the knee, forming a large fleshy mass which covers the front and sides of the femur.

Muscles Crossing the Hip and Knee Joints

The quadriceps femoris muscle group (rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medius, and vastus intermedius) crosses the knee via the patella and acts to extend the leg. The hamstring group muscles (semitendinosus, semimembranosus, and biceps femoris) flex the knee and extend the hip.

Abductors and lateral rotators

The abductor and lateral rotators can help control forces applied to the knee joint,23 and help control femoral medial rotation and adduction during dynamic daily activities.

What are the 6 lateral rotators?

The lateral rotator group is a group of six small muscles of the hip which all externally (laterally) rotate the femur in the hip joint. It consists of the following muscles: Piriformis, gemellus superior, obturator internus, gemellus inferior, quadratus femoris and the obturator externus.

Posterior Muscles of the Right Hip and Thigh

The gluteal muscles can be divided into two main groups: Large and superficial muscles which mainly abduct and extend the thigh at the hip joint. These are the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, gluteus minimus, and tensor fasciae latae.
